Wang Yi: The Chinese Side Stands Ready to Continue to Play a Constructive Role in Resolving Hotspot Issues in the World
2019/10/22

On October 21, 2019 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi answered a question about the Syrian issue in an exclusive interview with Agence France-Presse in Paris.

Wang Yi said, the Chinese side has always pursued an independent diplomatic policy and decided its position regarding all hotspot issues, including the Syrian issue, on the merits of each issue. When dealing with hotspot issues, the Chinese side does not participate in the game of great powers, has no intention to engage in geopolitical struggle, and has no selfish interests. The Chinese side stands ready to continue to play a constructive role in resolving hotspot issues in the world. The following points are very important. First, the United Nations (UN) should be the main channel. Second, countries in the region, especially neighboring countries, should play a positive role. Third, in the final analysis, it is up to the people of a country to determine its direction and destiny. With regard to the Syrian issue, the Chinese side supports the UN Security Council Resolution 2254, which clearly states that the Syrian issue should be "Syrian-led and Syrian-owned."

Wang Yi noted, China has always been clearly opposed to the use of force in other countries, especially those without UN authorization or consent from the countries concerned. With regard to recent situation in Syria, any action taken by the Security Council should be based on consensus and not simply reflect the views of any one country. China's position remains unchanged. We do not support Turkey's use of force in Syria and hope to adhere to the principle of political settlement. At the same time, we are ready to join hands with all countries, including Turkey, to combat terrorism and to jointly address the risk of terrorist spillover.
