Xi Jinping Sends Congratulatory Message to Charles Michel on His Election as President of the European Council

On July 7, 2019, President Xi Jinping sent a message to Charles Michel, congratulating him on his election as the new President of the European Council.

In his congratulatory message, Xi Jinping pointed out, the development of the current relations between China and the European Union (EU) is on a good momentum. The two sides have frequent contacts on various levels and their practical cooperation has yielded fruitful results. The people-to-people and cultural exchanges are flourishing, and coordination and cooperation between the two sides in dealing with global affairs is effective. The long-term steady progress of China-EU relations is in the common interests of the two sides, and also contributes to world peace and prosperity. The Chinese side supports Europe in playing a more important role in international affairs. I attach great importance to the development of China-EU relations, and stand ready to join efforts with President Charles Michel to bring about constant and new progress of the China-EU partnership for peace, growth, reform and civilization, so as to benefit the two peoples of China and Europe, and make greater contributions to the development and stability of the world.

On the same day, Premier Li Keqiang also sent his congratulatory message to Charles Michel. Li Keqiang said in his message that the Chinese side is ready to make joint efforts with the EU side to seize the important opportunity for the development of current China-EU relations, in a bid to constantly push forward China-EU comprehensive strategic partnership to a new level.
