Wang Yi Meets with Diplomatic Envoys of the Ten Countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in China

On the evening of October 29, 2018, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met in Beijing with diplomatic envoys of the ten countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in China.

Wang Yi expressed, the annual exchange between the Chinese Foreign Minister and diplomatic envoys of the ten ASEAN countries in China is a fine tradition that both sides have adhered to for many years. China-ASEAN relations have entered a new stage of all-round development. As the downward pressure on world economy increases and unilateralism and protectionism impacts the international order, China and the ASEAN countries should make joint efforts to cope with risks and challenges. We should cooperate with each other to uphold multilateralism, and adhere to coordination and cooperation to safeguard regional peace. The Chinese side is ready to make concerted efforts with the ASEAN countries to make the upcoming series of Leaders' Meetings on East Asia Cooperation, especially the China-ASEAN Summit a complete success with fruitful results.

Diplomatic envoys of the ten ASEAN countries in China congratulated on the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China as well as the tremendous development achievements the Chinese people have scored under the leadership of the Communist Party of China. The diplomatic envoys said, ASEAN-China partnership is ASEAN's most important partnership with the most strategic significance. ASEAN appreciates China's long-term high importance to its relations with ASEAN, support for the construction of the ASEAN Community and support for ASEAN in playing the role as a center in regional cooperation. The development of ASEAN-China relations benefits both peoples, and contributes to world peace and stability. The ASEAN side is willing to intensify communication and cooperation with the Chinese side to ensure the full success of the series of Leaders' Meetings on East Asia Cooperation and elevate ASEAN-China relations to new highs.

Both sides exchanged views on the focus of China-ASEAN cooperation in the next stage. Both sides agreed to strengthen the integration between the Belt and Road Initiative and ASEAN's Master Plan on ASEAN Connectivity, discuss the construction of the China-ASEAN blue economic partnership, enhance cooperation in areas including digital economy, further deepen people-to-people and cultural exchanges, strive to conclude the negotiations on the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership within this year, and safeguard multilateralism and free trade together.

Wang Yi also briefed on the current economic situation in China and China's views on topics such as China-United States relations.
