The 11th "Love Knows No Border" International Charity Sale Successfully Held

Beijing in October is blessed with fresh air and warm sunshine. On October 27, 2019, the warm-up field of the National Stadium was filled with laughter and guests, which added more color and warmth of love to the autumn.

The "Love Knows No Border-Love for Growth" International Charity Sale, initiated by Mme. Qian Wei, wife of State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi, was held in Beijing. The Charity Sale, which has been held for 11 consecutive years, was attended by nearly 90 foreign embassies in China, representative offices of international organizations in China and almost 50 Chinese enterprises and public institutions.

Great love helps poverty alleviation

The Charity Sale kicked off with the spirited performance of Chinese martial arts and the exotic traditional cultural dances of Pakistan and Azerbaijan. State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his wife Qian Wei, Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Committee of the Foreign Ministry Qi Yu, Vice Foreign Minister Le Yucheng and other leaders of the Foreign Ministry, as well as over 150 representatives from foreign embassies in China, representative offices of international organizations in China and their wives attended the opening ceremony.

The opening ceremony started with a video introducing China's glorious achievements in poverty alleviation and its remarkable contributions to the international poverty reduction cause, reviewing the work of the Foreign Ministry for the poverty alleviation cause in Jinping County and Malipo County of Yunnan Province and displaying the fruits of last year's International Charity Sale. Everyone present was deeply moved by those charity primary schools, libraries, bridges built for the convenience of people, clinics and the big smiles on the faces of children helped by the event.

Mme. Qian Wei expressed sincere gratitude to foreign embassies in China, representative offices of international organizations and good-hearted people at home and abroad for their long-term care and support for China's poverty alleviation cause. Qian Wei said, the past decade has witnessed the fruitful results of the International Charity Sale, which has now become a window demonstrating the diverse cultures of different nations, and served as a platform for the Chinese people to follow the world closely and a grand event for all participants to devote their love. Donations will be used for the charity poverty alleviation causes in provinces such as Yunnan, Gansu, Henan, Guizhou and Guangxi. Through the International Charity Sale, the kindness of different countries around the world and of all sectors of society will be passed on to the villagers, the handicapped and children in poverty-stricken mountainous areas, lighting their hopes of life and changing their fates.

Qian Wei said, winning the battle against poverty is a solemn promise made by the Chinese government to its people. General Secretary Xi Jinping pointed out that we should take alleviating poverty through education as a fundamental solution to ensure that all children of the impoverished have access to sound basic education. The healthy and happy growth of children is the common responsibility of the society. The fund raised in this Charity Sale will be used to build school playgrounds for Jinping County and Malipo County in Yunnan Province and help children in poverty-stricken areas run to a better future.

Polish Ambassador to China Wojciech Zajączkowski delivered a speech on behalf of the diplomatic corps in China. He said, foreign diplomatic corps in China, offices of international organizations in China and all sectors of society take an active part in "Love Knows No Border" International Charity Sale and gather the power from all parties to provide help for the impoverished group. It is such great love beyond countries and nations that motivates us to gather in the Bird-Nest and take part in this great project. He hoped that "Love Knows No Border" will not only be the theme of the Charity Sale today but also an inspiration for all countries to address international relations.

   

State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Mme. Qian Wei presented the Award of Contribution, the Award of Elegance and the Award of Compassion respectively to 17 foreign embassies in China and presented certificates to 46 Chinese enterprises and public institutions to show their appreciation for their active participation in the charity sale and contributions to China's poverty alleviation cause over the years.

The father of Wang Xinlian, a hearing-impaired child who was helped by the 2018 charity sale, travelled all the way from Hui County, Longnan City, Gansu Province to the site of the event. He said excitedly that he felt like his world was immediately lit up upon hearing his child said "dad" and "mum". He expressed his heartfelt thanks to the "Love Knows No Border" and all the good-hearted people for letting his child hear the love of the world and have a childhood no different from other children.

The youth of the Zhuang ethnic group from Malipo County, a key target of the Foreign Ministry, presented a cheerful folk dance performance "Xiangshanban", which reflected the joy of eradicating poverty and achieving prosperity. Agricultural and sideline products of Jinping County, another key target county, were also brought to the site. Representatives of the counties expressed, with the help from all sectors of society, the people of the two counties are now working hard to live a better life. They are determined to make concerted efforts to win the fight against poverty.

Great love brings splendor and happiness

The charity sale had a dazzling array of products from various countries such as the sweet Arabian date palm fruits, the Thai Tom Yum Goong soup which is sour and spicy, the exquisite Uzbek handicrafts, the Ghanaian wood carving, Russian bread, Vietnamese Spring Rolls, Kimchi of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Korean ginseng from the Republic of Korea, German beer, Spanish wine, Polish sausage, Irish cheese, coffee from El Salvador, Afghan wool products, Jordanian skin care products of the Dead Sea mud treatment, Bulgarian rose oil and Lithuanian amber and beeswax. They were very popular among the large crowds.

   
   

Wang Yi and Qian Wei visited all the booths. Foreign diplomats greeted the guests in Chinese fluently. The Azerbaijani Embassy in China especially invited their national dance troupe for the event. Pretty girls and handsome boys held their hands and formed circles during the dance. Fijian students in China performed the war dance, bringing the passion of Pacific islands to Beijing in autumn. Belarusian Ambassador to China's nine-year-old son peddled a special potato pie with a standard Beijing accent, attracting many people to take photos with him. Young children, curious and excited, run from one booth to another while adults enjoyed themselves selecting and purchasing the goods.

   

Over 7.1 million yuan was raised in the event, and the proceeds will be used for building new playgrounds for schools in Jinping County and Malipo County in Yunnan Province through China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation.

A total number of nearly 40 million yuan raised over the past 11 years have been used for implantation of artificial cochlea for 120 hearing-impaired children, operation for more than 130 children suffering from congenital heart disease, operation for over 1,500 patients suffering from cataract, over 2,000 primary and middle school teachers in poverty-stricken areas, as well as for building 22 bridges, 8 clinics, 2 teaching buildings, 2 cisterns and 2 rehabilitation centers for the disabled in poverty-stricken mountainous areas and improving the infrastructure in 2 villages.
