China and Egypt established diplomatic relations on May 30,1956. And the relationship between the two countries has been developing very smoothly. In the sixties, Premier Zhou Enlai visited Egypt three times. After that, President Li Xiannian, President Yang Shangkun, Premier Li Peng, Chairman of Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) Li Ruihuan, Vice Premier Zhu Rongji, Chairman of National People's Congress (NPC) Qiao Shi, President Jiang Zeming, Vice Premier and Foreign Minister Qian Qichen, etc. have visited Egypt one after another.

From the Egyptian side, President Mubarak (eight times), Premier Gan Zoury , Speaker of People's Assembly Sorour, etc. visited China.

In April 1999,when Egyptian President Mubarak was visiting China, he signed a joint communique with Chinese President Jiang Zeming on establishing strategic cooperative relationship between Egypt and China.

In April 2000, Chinese President Jiang Zemin and Egyptian President Mubarak met at Alexandria.

In September 2001, Chinese President Jiang Zemin and Egyptian President Mubarak held a telephone talk and reached broad concensus on terrorism.

In January 2002, President Mubarak paid his 8th visit to China and in April, Premier Zhu Rongji visited Egypt. It is for the first time that the state leaders of the two countries exchanged visits in the same year. These two important visits enjoyed great success and laid a solid foundation for the future development of bilateral relations by greatly enriching the content of China-Egypt strategic and cooperative relations and further promoting and deepening the friendly bilateral cooperation in the political, economic, tourism, cultural, scientific and technological fields.

From 27 Jan. To 2 Feb., Chairman of the Chinese People's Institute of Foreign Affairs Mei Zhaorong visited Egypt, and met with Vice Prime Minister Wali, Speaker of the People's Assembly Sorour, Minister of State for the Enviornment Affairs Reyad, Vice Secretary-general of the Arab League, Assistant Foreign Minister for Asian Affairs Shalaby.

From 17 to 21 March, President of China Council for the Promotion of International Trade Yu Xiaosong visited Egypt and attended the first meeting of China-Egypt Joint Business Council. Mr. Yu and Chairman of Egypt Business Association Khalid co-chaired the meeting and the two sides had broad exchanges of ideas on promoting cooperation in the fields of industry, agriculture, tourism and nevigation.

From 28 March to 2 April, Deputy Director of General Administration of Sport Zhang Faqiang visited Egypt.

From 12 to 16 April, Minister of Education of China Chen Zhili visited Egypt and met with President Mubarak, Prime Minister Ebeid, Minister of Education Bahaa Eddine and Minister of Higher Education and the State for Scientific Research Shihab. Minister Chen also visited the Remote Education Project and attended the ceremony on donating 50 sets of electronic education facilities by Chinese Education Ministry to Ain Shams University.

From 19 to 23 April, at the invitation of President Mubarak, Premier Zhu Rongji visited Egypt and met respectively with President Mubarak, Speaker of the People's Assembly Sorour, Speaker of the Shura Council Helmy and Secretary-general of the Arab League Moussa. Premier Zhu also held talks with Prime Minister Ebeid, attended and spoke at the luncheon hosted by Egyptian entrepreneurs. During the visit, China and Egypt signed agreements on economic and technological cooperation and animal quarantine. The two sides also exchanged letter on building a Chinese school in Cairo. Premier Zhu also visited Sham Sheikh and Abu Simble.

On 5 May, Vice Mayor of Chongqing Cheng Yiju visited Egypt and met with the Deputy Minister of the Water Resources and Irrigation.

From 10 to 17 May, Chairman of the Legislation Committee of the National People's Congress Wang Weicheng visited Egypt and met with Speaker of the People's Assembly Sorour, Speaker of the Shura Council Helmy and Minister of Justice Nasr. He also held talks with Chairman of Constitution Committee of the People's Assembly Moussa.

From 10 to 18 May, Senior Councillor of China National Petroleum Corporation Wang Tao visited Egypt and met with Prime Minister Ebeid, Deputy Prime Minister Wali, Minister of Petroleum Fahmi and Secretary-general of the Arab League Moussa.

From 15 to 20 May, Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the People's Liberation Army of China (PLA) Wu Quanxu led a delegation to visit Egypt and met with his counterpart from Egyptian army.

From 4 to 10 June, Deputy Minister of Water Resources Suo Lisheng visited Egypt and met with the First Secretary of Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation of Egypt.

From 8 to 10 June, Chairman of Xinjiang Uygor Autonomous Region Abulaiti.Abudurexiti visited Egypt and met with Minister of Awqaf (Religious Affairs) Zaqzouq and Imam of Azhar Tantawi.

From 14 to 18 June, Chinese Naval Fleet led by Major General Ding Yiping, Commander of the North China Sea Fleet, made a port call at Alexandria. General Ding met with Egyptian Navy Commander Tamer and Governor of Alexandria Governorate.

From 21 to 25 June, Vice President of State Administration of Radio, Film and Television of China Zhao Shi visited Egypt and met with Minister of Information Sherif, Chairman of State Information Service Osman, Chairman of Association of Radio and Television Khamid and Chairman of Cairo International Film Festival.

From 6 to 13 July, Deputy Minister of Supervision Chen Changzhi visited Egypt and met with chairman of the Administrative Control Agency Gen. Hitler Tantawi. The two sides signed cooperation agreement between the two ministries.

From 13 to 16 July, Vice Secretary of the CPC of Anhui province Wang Zhaoyao visited Egypt and met with Deputy Prime Minister Wali, Governors of Alexandria Governorate and Daqaliya. A Letter of Intent on Friendship between Anhui Province and Daqaliya was signed.

From 14 to 18 July, Mayor of Shenzhen Yu Youjun visited Egypt and met with President Mubarak, Minister of Higher Education Shihab. He signed 4 cooperation agreements in the fields of new energy, agriculture, and telecommunication with the concerned Egyptian ministries. He also visited Mubarak Scientific City.

From 21 to 26 July, Deputy Minister of Construction Zheng Yijun visited Egypt and held talks with Minister of Housing, Utilities and Urban Communities Sulieman. They signed the Cooperation Memorandum of Understanding between Ministry of Construction of the PRC and Ministry of Housing, Utilities and Urban Communities of Egypt.

From 22 to 25 July, Vice Secretary of the CPC of Heilongjiang province Han Guizhi visited Egypt and met with Governor of Asyut.

From 1 to 6 August, Secretary of the CPC of Hainan province Bai Keming visited Egypt and met with Deputy Prime Minister Wali, Governor of South Sinai and Mayor of Sharm el-Sheikh. A protocol to establish friendship provinces between Hainan and South Sinai was signed.

From 5-9 Sept., Vice Chairman of State Family Planning Commission Pan Guiyu visited Egypt and met with Minister of Health and Population Tag El Din.

From 2-6 Oct., Minister of Information Industry Wu Jichuan visited Egypt and signed a memorandum of cooperation with Minister of Communications and Information Nazif.

From 22-28 Oct., Vice President of the Supreme People's Court of China Li Guoguang and met with Minister of Justice Nasr and President of the Egyptian Supreme Court.

From 27 Oct. to 1 Nov., Minister of Culture Sun Jiazheng visited Egypt and met with Prime Minister Ebeid and Minister of Culture Hosni. Minister Sun and Minister Hosni co-hosted the inauguration ceremonies of Chinese Cultural Week and Chinese Cultural Center in Cairo. Minister Sun also gave a Luncheon speech.

From 6-8 Nov., Chinese special envoy on Middle East affairs Wang Shijie visited Egypt and met with Foreign Minister Maher, Political Adviser to the President Baz and Secretary-general Amr Moussa. The two sides exchanged views on Israel-Palestine conflict and Iraq issue. This is the first visit made by Chinese special envoy on Middle East affairs to Egypt.

From 8 to 13 Nov., Vice President of China Council for the Promotion of International Trade Ma Yu visited Egypt and met with Chairman of Egypt Business Association and China-Egypt Joint Business Council Khalid.

From 24 to 30 Nov., Vice Chairman of General Administration of Press and Publication Ren Zemin visited Egypt and met with Vice Prime Minister Wali and Chairman of State Information Service Osman. He also made a visit to the headquarters of the al-Ahram Press.

From 3 to 9 Dec., Vice Chairman of China Academy of Social Sciences Wang Luoling visited Egypt and met with Principal of Cairo University. The two sides signed an agreement on promoting cultural exchanges.

From 10 to 15 Dec., Vice Secretary of the CPC of Beijing Qiang Wei visited Egypt and met with Speaker of the People's Assembly Sorour and Governor of Cairo Governorate.

From 15 to 18 Dec., Vice Governor of Heilongjiang Province visited Egypt and held a seminar on trade promotion.

From 24 to 27 Dec., Vice Chairman of China Society for Human Rights Studies Jin Jian visited Egypt and held a seminar on human rights with Center on Asian Study of Cairo University.

From 23 to 26 Jan., President Mubarak made his 8th visit to China. During the visit, President Jiang Zemin held a talk with President Mubarak. Premier Zhu Rongji, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the NPC Li Peng and Chairman of the CPPCC also met respectively with President Mubarak. President Mubarak attended the inauguration ceremony of China-Egypt Business Council and visited the city of Shenzhen. The two sides signed five cooperation documents on economic cooperation, peaceful use of atomic energy, petroleum and organized trip to Egypt by Chinese citizens.

From 2 to 13 September, First Secretary of State for the Ministry of Foreign Trade Said visited China to attend Xiamen Trade and Investment Seminar.

From 7 to 10 Oct., Assistant Foreign Minister for Asian Affairs Shalaby visited China and met with Foreign Minster Tang Jiaxuan. Vice Foreign Minister Yang Wencang held political consultation with Mr. Shalaby. The two sides exchanged views on bilateral relations and regional and world issues of common concern.

From 3 to 10 September, at the invitation of Administrative Control Agency of Egypt, High-Commissioner of Ministry of Supervision P.R.C Fu Jie visit Egypt and meet chairman of the Administrative Control Agency Gen. Hitler Tantawi, speaker of People's Assembly,H.E. Dr. Ahmed Fathi Sorour, Prime Minister Dr. Atef Ebeid.

From 7 to 10 September, at the invitation of Egypt-China Friendship Association, the Chairman of Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries Chen Haosu visit Egypt, and meet Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of Egyptian-Chinese Friendship Association Yousef Amin Waly, Egyptian Minister of Rural Development Mahmoud Said Ahmed Sherif, and Secretary-General of the Arab League Amr Moussa.

From 10 to 14 October, at the invitation of Ministry of Health and Population, Minister of State Family Planning Commission Zhang Weiqing visit Egypt and meet Prime Minister Dr. Atef Ebeid and Egyptian Minister of Health and Population. The two parties signed the Cooperation Agreement on Family Planning.
