2003/08/21

Egyptian-Chinese relations have witnessed much development since President Hosni Mubarak’s visit to Beijing early last year, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Fayza Abul Naga said yesterday following a meeting with the Chinese Ambassador to Egypt.

Abul Naga and Ambassador Liu Xiaoming reviewed means of enhacing bilateral cooperation in trade and investment in accordance with agreements signed during President Mubarak’s previous visit to China.

The cooperation accords, which cover scientific research, agriculture, information technology, environment and electricity projects, have created opportunities for exchange visits by senior officials with a view to increasing exports to China and attracting Chinese investments, Abul Naga said, lauding China’s interest in and contributions to developiong technical training.

China is keen to contribute to projects in transport, electricity and vehicle manufacture, in addition to participation in the development of the industrial zone area in northwest Gulf of Suez, she said.

Although Chinese investments in Egypt has risen by 40 per cent to $46 million dollars last year, many more investment opportunities are still open to both countries, she added.
