A delegation of 10 Chinese Scientists attended Bio-vision Alexandria 2004 International Forum held on April 3-6 in the city of Alexandria of Egypt. Professor Chen Zhu, Academician and Vice President of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Prof. Yang Huanming and Director of Beijing Genomics Institute made speeches in the forum. They stated the advantages of China in developing biotechnology including abundant gene resources and long history of civilization of agriculture and traditional medicine. They also introduced to the audiences China's important achievements in accomplishing 1% task of international human genome research project, and rice, pig and chicken genome researches. Their points of view on cooperation between developed and developing countries in the bio-technology were very appreciated by the participants from around the world. 4 Nobel Laureates and more than 70 scientists from many countries contributed their presentations in the forum. The participating scientists intensively discussed the issues of food security and safety, human health environment and agriculture of the current world especially of the developing countries, as well as the role of biotechnology in solving these problems and various limitations. The theme of the forum is "ethics, patent and the poor". |
