On May 20, 2014, President Xi Jinping met in Shanghai with President Islam Karimov of Uzbekistan.

Xi Jinping said, China-Uzbekistan cooperation in all fields has enjoyed rapid development since the establishment of the strategic partnership between the two countries and the signing of the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation. I wish to continue the close contact with you, exchanging views on major issues of common concern in a timely manner and pushing forward the bilateral relations for more achievements.

Xi Jinping pointed out, Uzbekistan is an important country both in Central Asia and along the Silk Road. China and Uzbekistan are highly complementary and share much in common in our development strategies. Both sides should think creatively for the early formulation of the development plan for the bilateral relations in the next five years, and seize the opportunity of jointly building the Silk Road Economic Belt to expand the cooperation in economy, trade, energy, infrastructure construction and other fields and to push ahead the construction of the China-Central Asia natural gas pipeline on schedule. The relevant departments of both countries should well implement the cooperative projects of the preservation and restoration of the historic city of Samarkand and the Ulugh Beg Observatory. China is willing to exchange experience with Uzbekistan on the governance and administration of state affairs, adhering to the development paths chosen by the two peoples and maintaining the momentum for economic and social development as well as social stability in both countries. Both countries should enhance communication and coordination on regional affairs and major international issues and work together to improve trust and cooperation among Asian countries through the platforms such as the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA), safeguarding regional peace, stability and development.

Karimov expressed that since President Xi Jinping paid his successful state visit to Uzbekistan in September last year, Uzbekistan-China relations have developed in an all-round manner. As a sincere good friend of Uzbekistan, President Xi Jinping personally cares about and promotes Uzbekistan-China cooperation. Uzbekistan admires China for the strategic foresight, appreciates its firm adherence to the self-chosen development path and supports the Chinese people striving for the realization of the Chinese Dream. Uzbekistan will firmly uphold the friendly policy toward China and always be the resolute cooperative partner of China. The Uzbek side stands ready to actively participate in building the Silk Road Economic Belt and to facilitate economic and trade exchanges and connectivity, forging a closer bind between the development of Uzbekistan and China's prosperity.

Wang Huning, Li Zhanshu, Han Zheng, Yang Jiechi and others were present at the meeting.
