On May 18, 2014, Foreign Minister Wang Yi met in Shanghai with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

Wang Yi said that the Summit of Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA) will soon be convened in Shanghai. China is willing to join efforts with all sides, trying to form a concept of security in Asia that meets the requirements of Asia and to promote the establishment of a regional security structure. Wang Yi stressed that the Asian affairs should be decided by Asian countries and the Asian countries are truly capable of maintaining peace and stability in the region.

Ban Ki-moon said that China hosting the Summit will strongly promote the development of the CICA. The UN supports the success of the Summit.

Wang Yi stated, the UN was founded on the basis of the victorious outcomes of the World War II. The international community should remain vigilant of the actions attempting to turn back the wheel of history. As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, China acts as a positive force in safeguarding fairness, justice and the world peace. We will, as always, support the work of the UN.

Ban Ki-moon expressed that only with a proper attitude facing the history can a nation embrace its future and realize the reconciliation and cooperation with other nations. The UN thanks China for its important contribution in promoting the world peace and development and for its constructive role in solving regional hotspot issues. The UN stands ready to strengthen cooperation with China.

Both sides also made in-depth exchanges of views on the UN affairs, the situation in Ukraine, and the issues of Korean Peninsula, Syria, South Sudan, climate change and others.
