President Xi Jinping Meets with President Sebastian Pinera of Chile

On 6 October 2013, President Xi Jinping met in Bali Island, Indonesia with President Sebastian Pinera of Chile.

Xi Jinping expressed that in terms of relations with China, Chile is always at the forefront of Latin American countries. China and Chile have established strategic partnership and have fully built bilateral FTA with stable and rapid development of bilateral relations. In the process of realizing their respective development goals, the two countries enjoy huge potentials for cooperation and can absolutely become an example for mutually beneficial cooperation and common development between China and Latin American countries.

Xi Jinping raised proposals on bilateral cooperation. First, to improve and make good use of bilateral cooperation mechanisms and to strengthen overall planning. Second, to leverage the advantages of China-Chile FTA and to expand the scale of bilateral trade and investment. China is ready to import more specialty products from Chile and supports competent Chinese businesses for investing and developing in Chile. China hopes that Chile will provide support and facilitation. Third, to leverage complementary advantages in technology, resources and financing and to actively carry out mining industry chain cooperation, production and processing cooperation on agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry and fishery, as well as scien-tech innovation cooperation in the fields of new energy, bio-tech and polar ocean. Fourth, to encourage people-to-people and cultural exchanges, especially youth exchanges between the two countries. Fifth, to keep close communication and coordination within APEC and to join hands maintaining prosperity and stability in the Asia-Pacific region. To jointly push for the establishment of the Forum on China-Latin America Cooperation. China appreciates Chile and other Latin American countries for initiating the establishment of Latin America's Pacific Alliance, for being committed to promoting trade liberalization and for advocating strengthening economic and trade ties with Asia-Pacific countries. China is ready to carry out cooperation with the Alliance.

Pinera expressed that in 1970, Chile took the lead in South America in establishing diplomatic relationship with China. Chile appreciates China's time-honoured civilization and congratulates China on the enormous achievements in the modernization drive. Chile is ready to strengthen strategic partnership with China, to promote bilateral trade and mutual investment and to explore cooperation in the fields of clean energy, infrastructure construction, disaster prevention and mitigation and education. China is welcomed to set up a scientific research centre in Chile to carry out joint research in astronomy and other fields. Chile is ready to actively push for the establishment of the Forum on China-Latin America Cooperation and to promote cooperation between Latin America's Pacific Alliance and China. Chile supports China for successfully hosting the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting next year and is ready to maintain communication and coordination with China in Asia-Pacific regional cooperation and other fields.

Following the talks, the two heads of state witnessed the signing of agreements on establishing the Permanent Commission between the two governments, economic cooperation and coordinating strategic dialogue mechanism.

Wang Huning, Li Zhanshu, Yang Jiechi and others were present at the meeting.
