On Oct. 6, 2013 (local time), Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott in Bali, Indonesia.

Xi Jinping pointed out that China and Australia are both important countries in the Asia-Pacific region. Close cooperation between the two countries not only conforms to the fundamental interests of the two countries, but also contributes to regional and global peace and development. China has always viewed and grown the Sino-Australian relations from a strategic and long-term perspective. China is willing to work together with Australia to push the further growth of bilateral strategic partnership and make the bilateral relationship a fine model of harmonious coexistence and win-win cooperation between countries of different social systems, history, culture and at different development stages. The two sides should consolidate the four bonds in bilateral ties. The first bond is mutual trust. The two sides should respect each other's core interests and major concerns and view each other's strategic intentions from an objective and rational perspective. The two sides should achieve common progress through inclusion and mutual learning and pursue win-win results through further cooperation. The second bond is economy and trade. The two sides should proceed from a spirit of mutual benefits, win-win cooperation, mutual understanding and mutual compromise to push bilateral free trade agreement (FTA) negotiations to achieve substantive progress at an early date. The two sides should continue to expand cooperation in traditional areas such as energy and resources and actively explore other new areas of cooperation such as infrastructure development, information technology, and environmental protection. The third bond is people-to-people and cultural exchanges. The two sides should deepen mutual understanding and friendship by expanding exchanges in education, culture, youth and other areas. The fourth bond is security. The two sides should continue to strengthen military exchanges through the defense strategic consultations and mutual visits of warships.

Xi Jinping said that the Asia-Pacific region has maintained overall political stability, economic vitality and vibrant regional cooperation. Countries in the region should focus on development and economic growth. China and Australia may strengthen communication, coordination and cooperation through diplomatic and strategic dialogues and other mechanisms. China is ready to work with Australia to play a constructive role in ensuring that the upcoming APEC meeting would achieve its desired outcomes.

Tony Abbott said that the continuous rise of China's national strength is a blessing to the world, not a challenge. Australia's prosperity has benefited from the cooperation with China. He pledged that during his term Australia would stay committed to boosting the "four bonds" of mutual trust, economy and trade, people-to-people and cultural exchanges and security so as to develop even more robust bilateral relations and that Australia would stay committed to being a good friend of China. Australia is willing to accelerate the bilateral free trade agreement negotiations with China and welcomes Chinese enterprises to invest in Australia. Australia wishes to enhance cooperation with China within the frameworks of the Group of Twenty and APEC.
