On 4 October 2013, President Xi Jinping met at the Malaysian National Palace with Supreme Head of State Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah.

Xi Jinping told Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah that in 1974 when he served as the 5th Supreme Head of State of Malaysia, China and Malaysia officially established diplomatic relationship. We express admiration for this. Next year marks the 40th anniversary of the establishment of China-Malaysia diplomatic relationship. In retrospect of the past, with the joint efforts of the generations of the leaders of the two countries and of the two peoples, China-Malaysia relationship has withstood the tests of the time and the changing international situation. It has maintained healthy and stable development with exuberant vitality and strength. Malaysia has become China's largest trade partner in ASEAN and bilateral cooperation has been increasingly close with expanding common interests.

Xi Jinping pointed out that with the in-depth development of economic globalization and social informatization today, the future and destiny of China and Malaysia are linked together more closely. China-Malaysia relations are very important to both countries. Prime Minister Najib Razak and I have agreed to upgrade China-Malaysia relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership and reached important consensus on strengthening practical cooperation. China is ready to work with the Malaysian side to push for greater outcomes of China-Malaysia relations so as to achieve mutual benefit, win-win outcomes and common development and to better benefit both peoples.

Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah expressed that President Xi Jinping's current visit has witnessed the profound traditional friendship and firm mutual trust between the two countries. It has pushed forward bilateral friendly cooperation to a higher level and has opened up a new chapter in bilateral relations. China's economic growth as well as its huge potentials have injected strong impetus into the global economy. Malaysia-China cooperation is facing greater opportunities. It is believed that under the leadership of President Xi Jinping, China will continue to make efforts in consolidating and strengthening friendly cooperative relations with Malaysia and other countries in the region.
